Day 4 of 40 · Drawing Near

The Secret of the Secret Place

Word

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:6

Daily Devotional

Another reason to spend daily time with the Lord is the promise of reward, or rather, the promise of being rewarded with Him. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught His disciples to pray, revealing what some call “the secret of the secret place”: as they withdraw from daily life to enter their prayer closets, the Father sees them praying in secret and rewards them.

Hebrews 11 affirms this, stating that whoever seeks Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. This makes daily time with Him foundational to the Christian faith, as we receive God Himself as our reward.

By cultivating a personal devotional life, you discover intimacy with God in the secret of the secret place.

Scriptures for Today

As you read today's Scriptures, read slowly and attentively, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you meditate on His Word.

Matthew 6:5-6

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Hebrews 11:6

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek Him.”

Luke 11:9-10

"And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

Worship

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You see what happens in secret and that You are my great reward. Thank You for meeting with me in the secret place; would you continue to cultivate our relationship and reward me with more of You.

Listen & Obey

Spend two minutes in silent, listening prayer. Write down what you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you. Here are some prompts to assist you:

  • Lord, what do you want to speak to me from these passages of Scripture as I start my day?
  • How do you want me to apply this truth today?
  • Who do I need to share this with today?
